REF:            2017-537

Subject:        Venous tourniquets

Request:

1)  Does the trust use single use venous tourniquets, reusable tourniquets or both?

2) What is the annual spend/usage on each category of tourniquet?

3) How many reported incidences of tourniquets being inadvertently left on a patients arm have there been in the past 5 years?

4) What is the value if any, of any litigation costs associated with any such incidences?

Response:

1)  Does the trust use single use venous tourniquets, reusable tourniquets or both? We use both types.
2) What is the annual spend/usage on each category of tourniquet? Based on the first six months spend of this financial year, our predicted annual spend is expected to be £2,362 on reusable and £3,198 on single use.
3) How many reported incidences of tourniquets being inadvertently left on a patients arm have there been in the past 5 years? There has been no litigation against the Trust in respect of venous tourniquets, and therefore no litigation costs associated with such incidents.
4) What is the value if any, of any litigation costs associated with any such incidences?
