Subject:        Neck of femur (hip) fracture repairs

 

 

Request:

I would like to make a Freedom of Information request for information to answer the following questions:

  1. Does the Trust perform neck of femur (hip) fracture repairs?
  2. Does the Trust have guidelines or a policy regarding the reversal of warfarin in patients undergoing surgery for neck of femur (hip) fracture patients?

o   If yes, please could this be emailed to me

o   If no, what is the commonest way that these specific patients are managed?

  1. Does the Trust have guidelines or policy regarding antibiotic prophylaxis for neck of femur (hip) fractures undergoing surgery?

o   If yes, please could this be emailed to me. (N.B. this policy may be found within the Trust guidelines for antibiotic prophylaxis in orthopaedic surgery)

o   If no, what is the commonest form of antibiotic propylaxis (and duration) that these patients are given?

  1. Does the Trust have specific guidelines or a policy regarding treatment of neck of femur (hip) fracture patients?

o   If yes, please could this be emailed to me

  1. Does the Trust have general guidelines or a policy regarding the management of patients on warfarin undergoing surgery?

2.     Does the Trust have guidelines or a policy regarding the reversal of warfarin in patients undergoing surgery for neck of femur (hip) fracture patients?

3.     Does the Trust have guidelines or policy regarding antibiotic prophylaxis for neck of femur (hip) fractures undergoing surgery?

Hip Fractures    Single dose Teicoplanin 400mg IV + Gentamycin IV 3mg/Kg in anaesthetic room on induction only

Other Trauma Surgery          Flucloxacillin 1g IV on induction only

If allergic to penicillin then Clindamycin 600mg on induction

If patients are high risk for MRSA (see below) then treat as per hip fractures (Teicoplanin 400mg IV on induction only) (Available on the orthopaedic section online)

If no, what is the commonest form of antibiotic propylaxis (and duration) that these patients are given? N/A
4.     Does the Trust have specific guidelines or a policy regarding treatment of neck of femur (hip) fracture patients?

If yes, are we able to provide a copy?

As a Trust we have our own hip fracture proforma, we follow NICE guidelines alongside clinical judgement regarding the treatment of hip fracture patients.
     5.     Does the Trust have general guidelines or a policy regarding the management of patients on warfarin undergoing surgery? Yes
