Adolescence is a time of rapid development physically and emotionally.

  • Exam stress
  • Family life e.g. divorce / separation, being a young carer
  • Bullying
  • Drug or alcohol use
  • Peer pressure
  • Death or loss of a friend or family member
  • Low self esteem.

Signs and symptoms:

  • Poor appetite
  • Poor sleep
  • Self-harm
  • Suicidal thoughts.

What can I do to be emotionally healthy?

  • Talk to friends and family, ask for help
  • Have some ‘me’ time – take time to de-stress and do something you enjoy e.g. watch a film, go to the gym, spend time with your friends
  • Make sure you get plenty of sleep
  • Have a healthy balanced diet.

How can the Parallel help?

Staff at The Parallel can support you with your emotional health and wellbeing.

We are not mental health nurses however we can offer support, undertake emotional health assessments and make referrals to emotional wellbeing practitioners and Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) as well as other mental health services.

If you are struggling to get to The Parallel, your school nurses services also offer weekly drop-in sessions at your high school.

Exam stress

Tests and exams can be a challenging part of school life for children and young people. There are lots of ways to ease this stress and lots of support and guidance available.

If you are worrying about school or your exams some people who may be able to help are your friends and family, staff at school, your GP or your school nurse.

Bolton Single Point of Access

This service is for anyone aged 16+ who lives in Bolton who would like face to face counselling or therapy.

New referrals from both GPs/health care workers and individuals who wish to access talking therapy services should in the first instance call 01204 483101.

If you are a young person or adult under 35 and are at risk of suicide or are worried about a young person at risk of suicide call or text 0800 068 41 41.

KOOTH

This is a new service now available in Bolton for young people and adults from aged 11 up to 26. You can access 1:1 counselling online until 10pm at night.

Samaritans

The Samaritans offer a safe place for people of any age to talk any time they like, in their own way, about whatever’s getting to them. You don’t have to be suicidal.
