Congratulations to our Laboratory Medicine Department whose histology, biochemistry, haematology, blood transfusion, ante-natal screening, and genetic testing services all passed their accreditation assessments with flying colours during November.
This is an excellent achievement when set against the efficiency targets the team have already met during 2012. The seven assessors were full of praise over the four days with comments such as “remarkable productivity”, “a well organised service”, “impressed by the professionalism”. It wraps up an exciting year during which Bolton was also selected for funding as a national training site for clinical scientists under the Modernising Scientific Careers programme, was presented with three national and local awards for quality and efficiency, and became the first service to achieve NHS Improvement exemplar status as well as exemplar status by the Trust. Reports suggest, though, that the icing on cake has been 70 ‘A’ level students considering careers in laboratory medicine after their visits during National Pathology Week early in November.
