Members of staff from Bolton Breast Unit were part of this year’s winning team at Society of Radiographers annual awards for their work developing a supportive network for women to discuss breast health.
The team won this prestigious national award for the development of the Word of Mouth Mammogram e-Network (WoMMeN). WoMMeN is an online support facility that allows women to discuss breast screening and health with healthcare professionals and each other.
The network was set up following research with women who access mammography and breast services about how they would like to communicate with healthcare providers in the North West. The result was www.wommen.org.uk.They also developed a Facebook group which allows members to discuss breast screening and related health issues with each other as well as professionals.
The group is run by academics, practitioners, students and patients, and since launching they have worked together to publish articles, delivered presentations around the country and won thousands of pounds of research funding.
Julie Stein Hodgins, Mammographer and Health Improvement Practitioner at Bolton Breast Unit said:
“As a mammographer I have an interest in offering a quality service to the women who attend, encouraging them to attend every three years and looking at ways to increase uptake and support informed decision making.
“We’re delighted to have won this award and be able to raise the profile of the group even further.”
