Success at the Clinical Research Awards 2018

Gemma Faulkner - Investigator of the Year AwardThe winners of the Clinical Research Awards 2018 were announced last week and the Trust had success in two categories. Congratulations to Gemma Faulkner, Consultant in General Surgery, who was named Investigator of the Year. Her passion for research has been evident at Bolton for over two years and her enthusiasm and commitment has encouraged her fellow consultants to take up roles as Principal Investigators for studies, such as CREST 2 and HIP.

She supports and encourages other specialities to take part in research and is extremely proactive, constantly striving to introduce research in every clinical forum and introducing new studies to the team at every opportunity – the SUNRiSE study being just her latest project.

Sexual Health Clinical Research Award 2018The Bolton Sexual Health Department picked up a runner up title for Best Debut for their work on the PrEP study which looks at new prevention efforts to reduce the estimated 4,700 incident HIV infections occurring annually in England. The department opened recruitment to their first NIHR Portfolio study in October 2017. Since then, they have excelled in their commitment to setting up and delivering high quality research opportunities for their patients. Within just three months of opening, they had already recruited their total target of 29 patients. They’re now in the process of setting up a second trial and we’re sure they will be just as successful again.
