Geoff Chiu, Consultant for the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Unit at Bolton NHS Foundation is taking part in the Bolton Ironman 70.3 on Sunday 26th September 2021 to raise money for a good cause.
Geoff is one of the researchers at the Saving Face Charity and also works at the Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital, which is the hub for major elective maxillofacial surgery. Along with 8 other Consultants, the team treats patients who have cancer to the face and mouth, sustained facial injuries and patients with facial deformity.
As Bolton is a spoke site, our trauma/cancer patients (who require an inpatient stay) will transfer to Blackburn for surgery and the money raised will benefit them.
Geoff said: “I am raising money for new equipment which is above and beyond NHS standards, research to enhancing patient care and recovery for patients who have had surgery to their face and mouth.”
“I am definitely excited to take on this challenge. It will be hard on the day, but what will keep me going is the kindness and generosity that people have donated to support the charities I’m raising money for. I’m planning on going to back to work the next day!”
The Ironman 70.3 includes:
1.2mile swim in Pennington Flash
56 Mile cycle around the hills of northern Bolton, including the tough climb up to Belmont and Rivington
13.1 mile half marathon finishing in Bolton Town Centre
