Professional Background

Simon Kelly qualified in medicine in Ireland and has been a Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Trust since 1991 and instrumental in setting up the Bolton Eye Unit. His clinical interest is medical retina and general ophthalmology, including neonatal matters. He has served as Clinical Advisor to the Department of Health and authored the cataract pathway for the ‘18Weeks’ project. He was elected member of the Council of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists.

Mr Kelly set up the College’s Quality and Safety Committee and of which he remains a member. He was Clinical Specialty Advisor to the National Patient Safety Agency. He has been an elected Governor of the Trust. He is Chair of the Local Negating Committee and a member of the British Medical Association’s Consultants Committee for the North West. He has long assisted the Ombudsman’s office and the Courts into matters of ophthalmology care.

Special Interests and Research

Mr Kelly is research active and has published circa 80 papers in peer reviewed journals. He lectures and teaches on ophthalmic topics to a wide range of audiences. He is an honorary Lecturer at the University of Bolton. He was recognised by the NHS with national Clinical Excellence Awards and by the University of Bolton with an honorary Doctorate in Health Care.

The Eye Unit (Ophthalmology) is a recognised centre of excellence offering patient centred care to the population of Bolton, Salford and surrounding areas. We specialise in assessing, diagnosing and treating all aspects of adult  and children’s eye problems and we are widely regarded as one of the leading NHS ophthalmic departments in England.
