Filming, photography and phone use on our sites

While we want you to feel comfortable doing this, we also have a responsibility to protect the privacy, dignity and confidentiality of all our patients, visitors and staff. The NHS Constitution recognises every patient’s right to privacy, and the following guidance is in place to support this.

Please:

• Do not film or photograph others (including people in the background) without their permission.
• Extra care should be taken around children and young people – consent must be obtained from a parent or guardian where appropriate.
• Always ask staff before recording them and respect their wishes.
• If someone asks you to stop filming or photographing them, you must do so immediately.
• Do not share anything online that could identify another patient, visitor or staff member.
• Be mindful that hospitals are sensitive environments where people may be unwell or vulnerable, and respect this when photographing or filming. Never film or photograph anyone receiving care, in distress, or in an emergency situation.
• Follow any signage about restricted phone use near equipment.

Our NHS sites are private property, which means this guidance applies to filming and photography across all areas, including outside our buildings, to help protect the privacy and dignity of everyone on site.

Recording your care

To ensure the best possible care and minimise distractions during your appointment, we strongly discourage the recording of consultations, scans or treatment discussions. Our priority is to maintain a safe, focused and confidential environment for all patients and staff.

In exceptional circumstances, recording your own care may be considered, but only with prior agreement from your clinician and arranged in advance. Any recording must not include other patients, staff who have not given explicit consent, or any confidential information.

Formal filming requests

Any planned filming or photography (including for social media, media, or projects) must be agreed in advance with our Communications Team. This is so we can ensure that the appropriate consent, safeguarding and privacy measures are in place.

Filming without permission may result in you being asked to stop or leave the site.
