Radiology

Our Radiology team provides a wide range of imaging tests to help diagnose and monitor medical conditions. Depending on your referral, you may have an X‑ray, ultrasound, CT scan, MRI scan, a nuclear medicine test, or an interventional radiology procedure. You will be referred by the healthcare professional looking after you.

We also operate a dedicated Interventional Radiology suite, offering treatments such as fibroid embolisation, peripheral angioplasty, and image‑guided biopsies.

Before your appointment

Your appointment letter/ booking call will explain:

– The date, time and type of your scan

– Where you need to attend

– Whether any preparation is required, such as fasting, removing metal items, or completing a safety questionnaire

You can also ask your imaging specialist for information on the day.

You will also receive an automated text reminder. Please do not reply to this message.

If you need to rearrange your appointment, use the telephone number provided in your letter.

What to expect

Different scans require different preparation. Here is a brief overview:

Ultrasound

– Takes 15–45 minutes.

– The scan may be external, internal, or carried out using a small endoscope.

CT Scan

– You may need to remove clothing with metal or change into a gown.

– Some scans require a contrast injection, explained on the day.

– Usually lasts 10–20 minutes.

Xray

– Metal items may need to be removed.

– The image takes only a few seconds, although more than one view may be required.

– Please tell us if you are or may be pregnant.

MRI scan

– A safety questionnaire must be completed before the scan.

– All metal and magnetic items must be removed.

– The scanner is noisy; earplugs or headphones will be provided.

– Scans take 15–90 minutes, depending on the area. Some require a contrast injection.

– Results are usually available within 1–2 weeks.

Nuclear Medicine

– Involves a small injection of a radioactive tracer.

– Scans may begin immediately or a few hours later.

– Typically take 15–90 minutes.

Interventional Radiology

– Minimally invasive procedures performed under imaging guidance.

– Some require sedation or admission, and your referring team will remain involved in your care.

– Simpler procedures, such as biopsies, are often completed as outpatient appointments.

Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

We have introduced some AI tools to support radiologists in interpreting scans. These currently assist with:

– Chest X‑ray reporting

– Prostate MRI interpretation

AI helps improve accuracy and patient outcomes but does not replace expert clinical review. If you have any questions or concerns, please speak to the healthcare professional in charge of your care.
