Diabetes and Endocrinology

Our diabetes and endocrine teams work together to provide specialist care for people living with type 1 and type 2 diabetes, as well as a wide range of endocrine (hormone‑related) conditions, including thyroid disease.

We offer comprehensive assessment and support for individuals with diabetes, covering all aspects of care such as medication management, diet and lifestyle advice, patient education, risk‑factor management, and the prevention and treatment of complications.

We also provide expert diagnosis and treatment for many endocrine conditions, including thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, and pituitary disorders, alongside other hormone‑related problems.

What to expect at your appointment

Our adult clinics

Your GP or other healthcare professional will refer you into our service if you're newly diagnosed or need help to manage your condition.

We can help you manage:

  • Type 1 and 2 diabetes
  • Diabetes in pregnancy (gestational diabetes) or pregnancy when diabetic
  • Diabetic complications e.g. kidney problems, foot ulcers and foot disease

We can also help you with information and education around diabetes, advice about your diet and medication, and access to insulin pumps and other technology.

Our children and young people clinics

Our children and young people service is based at Bolton One, and we support young people up to age 16–17, in some cases up to the age of 19.

We work closely with children, young people and their families to help them manage diabetes confidently and live healthy, fulfilling lives. Every child is treated as an individual, with care focused on improving health, wellbeing, independence and ensuring they can enjoy a normal childhood.

We support all types of diabetes and offer both insulin injection and insulin pump therapy. Alongside regular consultant‑led clinics, we also provide:

  • Education sessions (including sensors and pumps)
  • Telephone consultations
  • Home and school visits

Education is incredibly important, and we provide each child in our care with a personalised, structured education programme to help them learn the essential skills needed to manage their diabetes day-to-day.

Understanding diabetes as a carer

Diabetes in Schools have produced awareness courses to help school staff and anyone caring for a child with Type 1 diabetes understand their basic care needs. We encourage their use alongside the child's personalised plan.
