Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC)

RAAC is a lightweight material that was used mostly in flat roofing, but also in floors and walls, between the 1950s and 1990s.

Since identifying reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) on the hospital site in 2023, we have put comprehensive safety measures in place and are progressing a major programme to remove it entirely.

This includes regular monitoring, temporary safety works, and a series of redevelopment and relocation projects that are now well underway.

Our priority remains the safety of patients, visitors and staff, and we are committed to fully removing all RAAC from our estate.
