Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) Clinic

Our DVT Clinic is a specialist outpatient service for adults aged 16 years and over. The service provides rapid assessment, diagnosis and treatment for patients with suspected Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) affecting the lower limbs.

The clinic provides a NICE-aligned referral and diagnostic pathway, using the two-level Wells score to guide D-dimer testing and diagnostic ultrasound where appropriate. Patients receive timely, evidence-based treatment under the care of our specialist nurse-led team, with clinical oversight from the Trust's Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) Lead Consultant.

Community Anticoagulation Support

The DVT Clinic works closely with the Community Anticoagulation Service to support patients registered with a Bolton GP who require bridging anticoagulation therapy.

This includes:

Supporting the early discharge of patients receiving anticoagulation who require INR monitoring.
Providing bridging therapy for patients undergoing or recovering from surgical or endoscopy procedures.
Working collaboratively with the community anticoagulation service to ensure continuity of anticoagulation management.

Diagnostic DVT Service

Our one-stop DVT service provides rapid, specialist assessment, diagnosis and evidence-based treatment for suspected lower-limb DVT in adult outpatients.

Patients are clinically assessed and triaged, with D-dimer testing and ultrasound arranged where appropriate to support diagnosis. Our specialist nurse-led team provides personalised treatment, education and reassurance, including advice on anticoagulation, prevention and signs of complications.

Where DVT is confirmed, patients receive a clear treatment and follow-up plan and are usually discharged back to their GP, with VTE Lead Consultant follow-up arranged where clinically required.

Appointments typically take 1–4 hours, depending on the assessment and investigations required.
