For a Better Bolton

Support at the hospital for people living with dementia

When you come into hospital, we want you and your loved ones to feel supported, understood and reassured. We provide a range of specialist dementia support to help make your stay as comfortable and positive as possible.

We are proud to support John’s Campaign, which means relatives and carers of people living with dementia are welcome to stay whenever they wish. Having someone familiar close by can provide comfort, reduce anxiety and help maintain continuity of care.

Carers are treated as valued partners, and you are encouraged to take part in care or therapy sessions if you feel able.

Support from Admiral Nurses

We have a specialist dementia nurse, known as an Admiral Nurse, supported by Dementia UK.

David Neilson, Admiral Nurse

Email: David.neilson@boltonft.nhs.uk

David is available to help families during their hospital stay and can offer.

  • practical advice on caring for someone with dementia
  • emotional support and coping strategies
  • help managing distress or changes in behaviour
  • guidance on planning ahead and making decisions
  • support during and after a hospital stay
  • links to other health and care services

Every family’s situation is unique. Admiral Nurses take the time to listen and offer tailored guidance to help you navigate any challenges.

If you would like to speak to an Admiral Nurse, please ask a member of staff on your ward or in the department you’re visiting.
