Mr Smith has studied at the University of Liverpool obtaining both a BSc(Hons) and a MBChB and has also studied at the Royal College of Surgeons of England where he obtained a FRCS (Gen Surg).
He had basic surgical training at Mersey Deanery between 2002 and 2005, higher surgical training at North Western Deanery between 2005 and 2011, obtained a fellowship at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary in 2011 and worked as a Locum Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon in Stepping Hill Hospital between 2011 and 2012.
Mr Smith came to work at Bolton NHS Foundation Trust in 2010 as a Specialist Registrar and in January 2012 became Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon.

Special interests and research
Mr Smith has special interests in endoscopy, laparoscopic colorectal surgery, management of rectal polyps, early rectal cancer and enhanced recovery programme.
