Professional background

Mr Richard Simpson joined the trust in 2024 and has a specialist interest in urinary tract stone disease.  At the Royal Bolton Hospital, he specialises in complex urinary tract stones performing Ureteroscopy, and also Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy procedures. He has been a leading figure in developing a specialist stone multidisciplinary team and Shockwave Lithotripsy service.

Since assuming his role, Mr Richard Simpson has successfully re-established the locally led paediatric urology service at the Royal Bolton Hospital.  As paediatric lead he treats young boys with undescended testes (orchidopexy) and problems with the foreskin (paediatric circumcision).

Mr Richard Simpson is an advocate for men’s health.  At the Royal Bolton Hospital, he is able to perform a thorough assessment of lower urinary tract symptoms utilising detailed diagnostics.  Here he offers a range of treatment options for benign prostatic disease including minimally invasive techniques (Rezum).

In addition to his subspecialist work, he undertakes diagnostic procedures for all urological cancers and a comprehensive range of core urological procedures.

In life outside of medicine Mr Simpson is a keen endurance athlete. He has competed in a range of swimming and cycling events, but running is his true passion and he now enjoys being cheered on by his young family.

Special interests and research:

Throughout his career, Mr. Simpson has always been a keen medical educator since serving as an Anatomy Demonstrator in his undergraduate days. He has now assumed the lead role in teaching medical students within his department. In this capacity, he has garnered recognition for his enthusiasm and mentorship.

Publications

Mr. Simpson has authored several peer-reviewed publications in the field of men’s health and has presented data internationally on the outcomes of novel shock wave lithotripsy pathways. He has consistently prioritised clinical governance and actively participates in quality improvement initiatives. In particular he has presented data internationally on measures to reduce in hospital catheter-associated infection rates.
