How we are regulated and assessed

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) is the independent regulator of health and social care services in England.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) assess organisations like ours to ensure we are meeting national quality and safety standards and delivering the best possible care.

The most recent CQC inspection report for Bolton NHS Foundation Trust, published on 18 October 2023, gave us an overall rating of Good, with Requires Improvement for the well-led domain.

During 2023, inspectors visited:

  • Children and young people’s services at Royal Bolton Hospital (May 2023)
  • A well led review focusing on our organisational leadership and governance (June 2023)

Following this inspection:

  • The safety rating for children’s services improved to Good
  • The rating for well led was changed to Requires Improvement, reflecting challenges at Board level relating to leadership, governance and relationships between previous Board members

All other domains (safe, effective, caring and responsive) remain rated as Good.

You can read more about the CQC’s findings and their recommendations in our published reports.
