How we use and protect personal information (children)
This page explains how we use and protect your personal information, under the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and Data Protection Act 2018 (DPA 2018).
Hello! This page explains how we look after your personal information when you come to us for care. It’s written especially for children and young people, so hopefully it’s easy to understand.
You need to remember one important thing, and that is that your personal information is your private property.
What is personal information? Personal information is anything that identifies you. Here are some examples: your name, address, birthday, pictures, email, hospital or medical records, your school, and details about your health.
How we use your personal information at Bolton NHS Foundation Trust: We are trusted just like your parents and teachers. When you come to one of our health centres or to hospital, we need some of your information so we can help make you better, give you the right treatment, contact you or your parents, and keep a record of your care.
The law and why we are allowed to use your information: In the UK, a law called GDPR says we must have a good reason to use your information. Our reasons are public task and health and social care.
How we keep your information safe: We keep your information protected with strong security and only staff who are helping care for you can see it.
Who we might share your information with: We may share your information with doctors, nurses, ambulance services, your GP, your parents, police (only when required by law), your school, or other hospitals – but only when necessary.
How long we keep your information: For children and young people, we keep health records until your 25th birthday, or 26th birthday if you were 17 when we treated you.
Your rights: You can ask what information we have about you, ask us to correct anything that is wrong, and ask questions about how we keep your information safe.
