As the warm weather continues across Bolton, Our Bolton NHS Charity has funded a simple but meaningful gesture to help patients and staff at Royal Bolton Hospital stay cool during the recent heatwave.
On Wednesday 15 July, the charity provided ice creams across hospital wards, bringing a little comfort and cheer to those spending time in hospital and the teams caring for them during the exceptionally warm weather.
Working closely with ward teams, ice creams were offered where clinically appropriate, giving patients a welcome opportunity to cool down and enjoy a small act of kindness.
One relative, whose nan is in palliative care, said:
“Only last week we had a conversation about how hot she is feeling, and she has the sweetest tooth ever, so wanted to get an ice cream.

“Then today she was told she can have anything she wants, so she chose an ice cream. We came downstairs and found out she can have a free ice cream from Our Bolton NHS Charity, which is so kind. It’s going to be the last thing she has, so thank you very much.”
Another visitor said:
“It’s such a wonderful, thoughtful idea to offer free ice creams to patients and staff. We are very thankful, thank you!”
The initiative reflects the charity’s commitment to enhancing wellbeing and improving the experience of patients, families and staff across the Trust.

Sharon White, Chief of Strategy and Partnerships, said:
“Being in hospital during the warm weather can be particularly challenging for patients. Many people spend long periods away from family, friends and the comforts of home, and periods of hot weather can make that experience even more difficult.
“While delivering excellent clinical care will always be our priority, we know that small gestures can have a big impact on how people feel during their recovery. Thanks to the generosity of our donors and supporters, we were able to bring comfort to patients and a moment of appreciation for the staff who work so hard to care for them.
“Sometimes it’s the smallest acts of kindness that make the biggest difference.”

Our Bolton NHS Charity funds the extras that go beyond NHS budgets, supporting projects, equipment and initiatives that improve comfort, wellbeing and patient experience for patients, families and staff.
While an ice cream may seem like a small gesture, it reflects Our Bolton NHS Charity’s ongoing commitment to making hospital experiences more positive. Thank you to everyone who supports Our Bolton NHS Charity and helps us continue making a difference for patients, families and staff across Bolton.
