Sending appointment letters digitally

Where we have a mobile phone number for you, we will send your outpatient appointment letters digitally, meaning you can view your appointment details quickly and easily on your mobile phone.

You can change the text size, zoom in or out, listen to the letter being read aloud, switch it to another language, download, print or securely email it, and add your appointment straight to your phone’s calendar – all while helping us reduce printing and postage costs and supporting a more environmentally friendly service.

How it works

  • You’ll receive a text message from ‘Bolton NHS’ inviting you to view your digital appointment letter. Tap the link to open the patient portal.
  • Enter your date of birth and the four‑digit PIN from the text to view your appointment details.
  • Choose to confirm, rebook or cancel. You can also download the letter or add the appointment to your calendar.
  • If you choose rebook, we will contact you to arrange a new date.
  • When you open your first digital letter, you can create a username and password to access all future letters in one place.
  • Reminder texts (7 and 2 days before your appointment) will come from +44 7786 209254.
  • If you don’t open your digital letter within 72 hours, a paper copy will be posted to you automatically.
  • If you don’t have a smartphone or haven’t given us your mobile number, you’ll continue to receive letters by post.

To update your mobile number or opt out of digital communications, email Digital@boltonft.nhs.uk with your full name, date of birth and postcode (or NHS number).
