Professional background

Mr Joseph Varghese studied medicine at Mangalore University, India. He completed his basic and higher surgical training in the North West of Scotland at Aberdeen’s Surgical Training Programme. He has been fortunate to have been trained under various surgical pioneers and has gained invaluable expertise from them. He has a strong interest in research, audit and training.

Following various laparoscopic training programmes in Paris, Mr Varghese undertakes day case laparoscopic procedures.

Mr Varghese is the clinical lead for upper GI and hepatobiliary cancers at the Royal Bolton Hospital.

Special interests and research

He specialises in upper GI and laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery, with a particular interest in reflux, gall bladder and hernias. He also specialises in endoscopies, colonoscopies and endoscopic removal of gall stones from the bile duct (ERCP). He provides lymph node biopsies and laparoscopic splenectomise for the haematologists.
