Exciting plans to create a new modern main entrance at Royal Bolton Hospital have been submitted, marking a major step towards improving the experience for staff, patients and visitors.
If planning permission is granted, the redevelopment will be fully funded and delivered by an external partner, with no impact on the Trust’s budget or financial position.
The proposed scheme will provide a brighter, more accessible and comfortable arrival space, that is easy to navigate and helps support visitors during what can often be a stressful time.
Improved facilities, alongside a wider choice of food and drink options will offer greater comfort and flexibility for those attending appointments or waiting for loved ones, helping to make time spent at the hospital as pleasant as possible.
The development is being carefully designed to enhance patient comfort, accessibility and wellbeing, being led by an experienced external specialist with a strong track record of delivering high-quality hospital entrance and retail environments across the UK.
Fiona McDonnell, Managing Director at iFM Bolton Ltd., who provide estate and facility services on behalf of Bolton NHS Foundation Trust, said:
“This is an exciting proposal that has the potential to make a real difference to our patients, visitors and staff. Arriving at hospital can be an anxious experience, and these plans are all about creating a more welcoming, accessible and comfortable environment from the very start. By improving our entrance facilities and offering better amenities, we hope to make time spent at Royal Bolton Hospital as positive and supportive as possible for everyone who comes through our doors.”
During the construction period, temporary patient and visitor entrance and drop-off arrangements will be put in place. These will be clearly communicated in advance of appointments and signposted on site.
Estates colleagues at iFM Bolton Ltd. are working closely with the partner organisation to ensure the development meets the needs of local residents and reflects the expectations of the communities served by Royal Bolton Hospital.
Subject to approval, work is expected to begin in summer 2026, with completion anticipated by spring 2027.
Frequently asked questions
How is the development being funded?
If planning permission is granted, the redevelopment will be fully funded and delivered by the external organisation managing the project. This means there will be no impact on the Trust’s budget or financial position, allowing us to continue focusing resources where they matter most – on patient care.
Will the work cause disruption?
As with any major redevelopment, there is likely to be some temporary disruption while work is carried out. We understand how important it is for the hospital to continue running smoothly, so every effort will be made to keep disruption to a minimum.
We’re working closely with our external partner and on-site teams to carefully plan the construction phase, manage noise and access, and maintain safe, clear routes around the site.
How will I access the Macmillan service?
During the construction work, access to the Macmillan service will continue, from a slightly different location -details of which are coming soon. Staff will also be on hand to help guide patients and visitors if needed, so everyone can continue to access support easily and safely.
What about the bus stop outside the main entrance?
We know how important public transport is for many of our patients, visitors and staff. Alternative arrangements will be in place, and access to our services will be well signposted.
How will this impact my appointments at the hospital?
Your care comes first. Hospital appointments, clinics and services will continue as normal during the redevelopment. If there are any changes to entrances, drop-off points or routes within the hospital, we’ll provide clear information in advance to help you plan your visit. Please allow a little extra time when attending appointments during construction, just in case.
When can I see what the main entrance will look like?
Once the planning process progresses and designs are finalised, we’ll share further visual images of what the new main entrance will look like. These will be available here on our website and shared through our usual communication channels so everyone can see how the space is taking shape.
