Nurses in Bolton are highlighting the life-changing impact of organ and tissue donation, as people in Bolton are urged to confirm their donation decision.
New figures released by Bolton NHS Foundation Trust to mark Organ Donation Week (Monday 22 – Sunday 28 September) reveal 36 patients in Bolton were referred for consideration of organ donation in the past year. This resulted in seven patients receiving a life-changing transplant.
More than 8,000 people in the UK are currently waiting for a transplant, and sadly last year more than 400 people died waiting.
Organs that can be donated by people who have died include heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, pancreas, and small bowel, while tissue donations may involve skin, bone, tendons, cartilage, corneas, sclera, heart valves, and blood vessels.
A single organ donor has the potential to save up to nine lives, and a tissue donor can enhance the lives of as many as 75 individuals, leaving behind a powerful legacy of healing and hope.
Suzanne Lomax, Clinical Service Lead and Chair of the Organ Donation Committee at Bolton NHS Foundation Trust, said:
Organ donation is one of the greatest achievements of modern medicine. It saves and transforms lives every day. Yet, despite its power, only around 1 in 100 people die in circumstances that make organ donation possible – typically in an intensive care unit or emergency department.
People are being encouraged to confirm their donation decision on the NHS Organ Donation register online, where you can make your choices clear.
Suzanne added:
Our Bereavement Team is there to support our patients, families, and staff during and after the loss of a loved one. Whether that be emotional support or specialist support during the final days of life – and it’s a privilege to work alongside so many families during their toughest days.
“Many of our clinicians have difficult but vital conversations with patients and families at end of life. But for organ donation to happen, families must be involved. That’s why it’s so important to talk about your decision with your loved ones. You can help save and transform lives. If you don’t have close family, you can nominate a representative such as a friend, GP, or faith leader.
