  • Rauf is widely recognised across Bolton for his leadership, across a number of roles in the town
  • He is committed to supporting teams to transform healthcare for the future

We are pleased to announce that we have appointed Dr Rauf Munshi as our new Medical Director, succeeding Dr Francis Andrews, who will retire in the New Year after over 35 years of dedicated NHS service.

Dr Munshi is widely recognised across Bolton for his leadership in healthcare and his commitment to tackling health inequalities. Most recently, his role as Associate Medical Director for Integration and Divisional Medical Director for Community Services, has seen him play a pivotal role in driving service transformation and quality improvement.

With a strong track record in clinical leadership, Dr Munshi champions quality, compassion, dignity and respect in patient care. His appointment reflects our commitment to nurturing internal talent and building on a legacy of excellence.

Dr Rauf Munshi said:

I’m looking forward to the opportunity to continue to work closely with partners and patients across Bolton to collaborate on how we provide our services, and to bring my experience and enthusiasm to how we transform over the years to come.

“We know that we must work differently to meet the needs of our patients and public, and I’ll be focusing on supporting our teams to ensure that we improve outcomes and reduce inequalities, with a continuing focus on quality and safety to meet the goals of the 10 Year Plan and our own strategy.

Fiona Noden, Chief Executive of Bolton NHS Foundation Trust, said:

Rauf brings exceptional experience and a deep understanding of our local communities, and I look forward to welcoming him to the Executive Team.

Dr Munshi is from Bolton, and began his NHS career in 2006. He joined Bolton NHS Foundation Trust in 2014 as a consultant in acute medicine and will continue to work clinically in a reduced capacity.

Dr Francis Andrews, who has served as Medical Director since 2018, will retire in the New Year. He leaves behind a legacy of leadership and innovation, having guided the Trust through significant challenges and achievements.

He said:

Serving as Medical Director has been nothing short of a privilege, and the most fulfilling role of my professional career. We have navigated some immense challenges, but our achievements and unwavering commitment to the diverse communities we serve have far outweighed them.

“I look forward to passing the baton onto Dr Munshi, who I know will bring considerable expertise and enthusiasm to the role going forwards.
