Parents who have experienced the loss of a baby will benefit from enhancements to the bereavement rooms at Royal Bolton Hospital, thanks to the generous support of a local family following their own heartbreaking loss.
Elle Goodwin and Alex Apted sadly suffered the loss of their son, Asa James, in May 2025, and were supported by the hospital’s midwifery team in the designated bereavement rooms on the unit.
The two rooms were designed to be a comfortable and quiet space away from the main area of the unit, so that parents who are experiencing a bereavement have somewhere peaceful to spend time alone with their precious baby.
The family, from Salford, generously channelled their grief into a fundraising drive, including a charity football match at nearby Winton Social Club. Their combined efforts raised over £5,000 for charities that support families experiencing baby loss, including Our Bolton NHS Charity, the charity partner of Bolton NHS Foundation Trust.
The funds were used to purchase items that will make the rooms more comfortable for the families that sadly require them.
Elle, Alex, their 3-year-old son Luca, and their wider family visited the unit on New Year’s Eve to bring their donations and to chat to the team at the hospital.
This included comfortable bedding, lamps with USB charging ports, white noise machines, and equipment and supplies to make hot drinks.
They have also purchased five privacy prams with the 4Louis Charity, which offer a discreet and dignified way to move a baby within the hospital environment.

Melanie Wildman, Assistant Director of Midwifery at Bolton NHS Foundation Trust said:
We are so grateful to Elle and Alex for their generous donations, they will make a huge difference to the other families that sadly need to use this space.
“Despite their grief they have gone the extra mile to make sure that others in their position are as comfortable as possible.
