We run a long COVID service to support and manage patients suffering with the long term effects of COVID-19.
To refer into the service please contact the Hub on 01204 331155 between 8am and 4pm Monday to Friday, or email Intermediatetierservices@boltonft.nhs.uk.
The length of time needed to recover from Covid-19 will vary from person to person and it is important not to compare yourself to others. Some of the most common COVID-19 effects include:
- Muscle weakness and joint stiffness
- Extreme tiredness (fatigue) and a lack of energy
- Loss of appetite and weight loss
- Sleep problems
- Problems with mental abilities – for example, not being able to remember some events, think clearly and being forgetful
- Changes in your mood, or anxiety or depression
- Nightmares or flashbacks
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
We know that COVID-19 is a multi-system disease affecting different parts of the body and people in different ways. Recovery may occur at a slower pace or take longer than you would expect. We are still learning about the long term effects and symptoms of COVID-19 which could have a significant impact on your day-to-day life. It can be difficult for you to explain to others how this has affected you as an individual and to understand whether changes to your health are new, or whether they are unfolding symptoms related to COVID-19. The term “Long COVID” has been used to describe the long-lasting and complex nature of COVID-19 experienced by an increasing number of individuals.
A support hub has been set up by Asthma UK and the British Lung Foundation to provide information and dedicated support for people who have been diagnosed with Covid-19 and their family members www.post-covid.org.uk/. The NHS has developed a website aimed at helping people recover from Covid-19. Whatever problems you are experiencing are important if they are causing you concern or limiting you. Every individual experience is unique. Visit www.yourcovidrecovery.nhs.uk to read more.
This information on the following pages has been developed by a group of healthcare professionals from our organisation, with the aim of supporting patients with their long-term recovery from Post-Covid 19 symptoms. The information is equally relevant to patients following a hospital admission and those patients who remain in their own homes; and it is intended that the advice provided will assist all patients and their families starting their long-term recovery following COVID-19. This information should not replace any individual advice you may have received on discharge from hospital. If you have any concerns about ongoing or worsening symptoms, please seek advice from either your GP or the NHS 111 website www.111.nhs.uk.
