Professional Background

Dr Kamal Ibrahim trained at the University of Khartoum and joined Bolton NHS Foundation Trust in 2007.

Previously, he has trained at hospitals in the North West and Yorkshire, the London Chest Hospital, the Royal London, St Bartholomew's and the University College of London Hospital.

Dr Ibrahim is Bolton NHS FT Lead for COPD and pulmonary rehabilitation as well as pleural diseases.

Special Interests and Research

Special interests include: COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and pleural diseases - including pleural ultrasound and more recently medical thoracoscopy which is currently performed by only a few hospitals in the North West region.

Research interests include: Anaemia in COPD


Dr Kamal Ibrahim has invented and patented a new chest drain system for which he received a British Medical Association award in 2005.

The award-winning respiratory service provides inpatient and outpatient services to all patients with respiratory disease, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, tuberculosis and lung cancer. The respiratory service offers full hospital services, supported by colleagues from The Christie and Wythenshawe and by a team of specialist nurses which provides a seven day service to both inpatients and outpatients, as well as home visits as required.
